Acronyms What is it? Brief Description
ACE Adult and Community Education Provides Short, Non-Accredited Courses, Introductory Vocational, Personal Development and Leisure Studies.
ACPET Australian Council for Private Education and Training A National Body representing the Private Education and Training Sector in Australia.
AQF Australian Qualifications Framework A Nationally Consistent Set of Qualifications for all Post -Compulsory Education and Training in all Australian States and Territories.
AQTF Australian Quality Training Framework Nationally agreed standards for the registration and auditing of training organisations, and accreditation of courses and qualifications. Formerly Australian Recognition Framework (ARF)
DEST Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training The Commonwealth Department responsible for a range of areas including Public and Private Schools, Higher Education Institutions and Vocational Education and Training. Also Commonwealth department with responsibility for the Apprenticeships/Traineeships system throughout Australia including employer incentives
DEWR Department of Employment and Workplace Relations Commonwealth department which deals with industrial relations issues including wage queries
GTC or GTO Group Training Company or Group Training Organisation A company that employs apprentices and trainees and places them with one or more host employers, usually small to medium-sized businesses. The host employers provide on-the-job training and experience, while the group training company organises off-the-job training and handles recruitment, rotation and payroll.
LLEN(s) Local Learning and Employment Network(s) A Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN) brings together local education providers, local employers, local councils and other interested people in their community to:
  • identify gaps in the provision of education and training locally
  • plan the development and delivery of educational programs for young people which will assist in meeting the targets for better completion rates and employment outcomes
  • take a strategic approach to developing pathways for local young people, especially those at risk of dropping out
  • monitor these pathways and outcomes to ensure they are beneficial to young people
  • advise the new Victorian Learning and Employment Skills Commission (VLESC) on the needs of young people in their area.
ITAB Industry Training Advisory Board(industry advisory body - formerly referred to as industry training advisory body or ITAB) An Organisation recognised as representing a particular Industry and providing advice to Government on the Vocational Education and Training Need s of its particular Industry. There are bot h State and National Industry Training Advisory Bodies.
MCEETYA Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs A body comprised of state, territory, Commonwealth and New Zealand ministers with responsibility for the portfolios of education, employment, training and youth affairs
MIPs Managed Individual Pathways Managed Individual Pathway Plans (MIPS) aim to ensure that the Victorian youth participation targets are achieved. MIPs involve individual student plans that generally consist of the following features:
  • Counselling
  • Career Management
  • Curriculum/Subject
  • Case Management
  • Interests
  • External Services
  • Student skills
  • Work Experience
  • School Specific
  • Work Placement
AAC Australian Apprenticeship Centre Organisations that provide advice and assistance to Apprentices, Trainees and Employers with Training Arrangements, Training Contract s and Financial Incentives under the Australian Apprenticeships System
NTF National Training Framework The quality assurance framework for VET products and services and comprises the AQTF and Training Packages.
OTTE Office of Training and Tertiary Education Victorian State Training Authority (STA)
RTO Registered Training Organisation Organisations such as TAFE Institutes, Private Providers and Schools that have been Registered to deliver Vocational Education and Training.
STA State Training Authority The government body in each State and Territory responsible for the operation of the Vocational Education and Training System within that jurisdiction.
TAFE Technical and Further Education A publicly funded post-secondary organisation which provides a range of technical and vocational education and training courses, and other programs

VET Vocational education and training Post -Compulsory Education and Training, which provides people with Occupational or Work ¿Related Knowledge and Skills. This excludes Degree and Higher Level Programs delivered by Higher Education Institutions.
